Doha - My First World Cup
March 2-7, 2008 By Hannah Whelan
I woke up early on Sunday excited about my trip to Doha as this was my first World Cup competition and the first time as a senior. I met my coach Sarah at Manchester Airport and we flew to Heathrow to meet up with the rest of the delegation ie: Louis Smith and Daniel Keatings, who were competing in the Men's competition. Unfortunately our flight was delayed & we missed our connection so we had to wait 4 hours for the next flight to Doha. The others were well on their way by this time. As if this wasn't bad enough, they had lost our luggage but Sarah and I were hoping it would catch up with us on the next flight.
We arrived in Doha at 2 O'clock in the morning and went straight to bed. The next day - still no luggage - we went over to the Arena to do podium training. Luckily I had put 2 leotards in my hand luggage. We walked into the Aspire Dome and I was amazed at how big it was. There were 2 training gyms, a huge competition hall, a full size indoor football stadium, 2 full size swimming pools and loads of other sports facilities. There was a lot of waiting around but I got to watch some world class gymnasts from other countries like China, Russia & Canada. Training went ok - I was competing on Bars beam & floor. After training we went back to the hotel for something to eat and still no luggage!
I was nervous the next day as it was qualifications and my first time competing on podium. Bars were disappointing but beam and floor went clean and I was excited to hear that I had made Beam & Floor finals in 8th place, especially as I haven't got everything in my routines after an injury 3 weeks ago.
Wednesday was a day off so Sarah and I went shopping for some essential supplies because we still had no luggage after 4 days! We walked to the shops so we could see a bit of the city and the local area. There is a lot of construction going on and it was like a massive building site. We counted 17 cranes! Also there was lots of sand & dust everywhere as Doha is a desert country and it was very windy but quite warm. The shops were good and I got an outfit to wear to the banquet and some dolly shoes which was great cos I didn't want to wear my tracksuit and trainers! Back at home frantic efforts were being made to find our bags. First they said they were still in London and then in Doha. Sarah & I went to the airport in a taxi excited to be picking our bags up but they couldn't find them. I had to wash my leotards in shower gel again that night.
Finals day was nerve-wracking but overall a good experience, finishing 8th on both pieces. We went to the banquet by the hotel pool in the evening & I really enjoyed the food and music & mixing with the other gymnasts. We didn't stay too late as we had a very early flight in the morning. We arrived at Heathrow to collect our luggage to find it had been in Doha since Tuesday morning! I got home at about 5pm and my bag arrived the next day.
Overall it was a great experience even with all the traumas & I am looking forward to the next time, hopefully with all my kit!
