Gymnast of the Year

TBGN: Your club, Liverpool, is undisputedly the best in the country. What is the atmosphere like at Park Road, and why do you think the club has so much success?
AW: It's probably because all the coaches work together as a team and everyone in the gym wants to do well.

TBGN: You seem to be very friendly and popular with other gymnasts. Is that a fair observation? What kind of a person are you?
AW: Yes it is. I really enjoy making new friends and its even better when they're gymnasts as well.

TBGN: Who are your best friends at gym?
AW: All my group.

TBGN: How was 2002 overall for you? Do you think of it as a successful year?
AW: It has been a good year. I would have liked to do slightly better in my comps because I had a few falls but I have learnt a lot of new things and my routines have been increasing in difficulty.

TBGN: What is your best gymnastic memory and your biggest disappointment?
AW: The best was winning the level 3 compulsory and passing elite grade after running into the vault and scoring 4.5. The biggest disappointment was the level 2 voluntary because I had 4 falls.

TBGN: You've recently added some new work on bars. What else are you working on for the 2003 season?
AW: I am working on new combinations and making sure the work I have is tidy and solid.

TBGN: You have been a part of the World Class Start and British U-12 squads. Can you tell us a bit about the squad training camps, and whether you find them helpful?
AW: They are really helpful because you get to train at different gyms and the best coaches in the country are there.

TBGN: What is your favourite/ least favourite skill to perform?
AW: I like them all.

TBGN: You have particularly good lines and posture, and great dance on floor. Have you had any formal dance training?
AW: No!

TBGN: What are the best and worst things about being an elite gymnast?
AW: Everything's good and being a gymnast makes you be a lot more disciplined in school. I really can't think of anything bad however hard I try.

TBGN: What are you goals for 2003?
AW: Make all my comps clean ones

TBGN: And what are your long-term goals in the sport?
AW: Representing G.B and ultimately the Olympics in 2008.

Thanks so much for your time Aisling. Best wishes for a successful 2003.
