Gymnast of the Year

TBGN: Amy, this year you are age-eligible for the World Championships, the qualifier to Athens. Is competing at the World Championships something that is on your list of goals for the year?
AB: I would love to think I will be able to compete in the World Championships, however last year was not a good year for me in competition so at the moment I am not part of the British Olympic squad. There are 10 gymnasts in that squad who are being groomed for the worlds and the Olympics. What I have to do is compete exceptionally well this year to prove myself again to the powers that be. I have made a good start this year by winning the Rushmore invitational and also competing well at Cumbernauld, my start values should be better this year with all the new work I am doing.

TBGN: If you competed in the Olympic Games, what would it mean to you?
AB: The Olympic games must be every gymnasts dream, the quality of gymnasts in Great Britain is improving all the time so the qualification is getting more difficult. To compete in Athens would be great, I need a good year this year to prove myself again, then Who knows what might happen.

TBGN: You come from the same gym as the double Commonwealth Silver medalist, Becky Owen, do you look up to her and her gymnastics?
AB: Becky is a very talented gymnast and a great friend, of course I look up to her. She is probably the most consistent Gymnast in GB at the moment and will get even better this year.

TBGN: Who else, both nationally and internationally, do you admire?
AB: Nationally I admire Beth Tweddle, her bars and her work rate are awesome and she is such a great person to know, Internationally I admire Svetlana Khorkina of Russia. I think the way she competes is great and is a role model for all gymnasts.

TBGN: What's been your best gymnastics memory so far?
AB: My best gymnastic memories must be winning the British Championships at level 2, also my first international competition versus France. The feeling of knowing I have represented my country was great.

TBGN: And what's been your worse?
AB: My worst time in gymnastics so far have been last years British Championships when I came off bars and did not compete the beam, the feeling of knowing all I worked for had gone in that moment. The other memory I would like to forget was when I was deducted .3 on beam in the grade 4 British finals for using a vault surround to mount the beam, I lost the title by 0.2...

TBGN: If you didn't do gymnastics, do you think you'd do any other sports?
AB: If I did not do gymnastics, I think I would have liked to be a long distance runner or play normal sports like Hockey or Netball. However this is not to be...

TBGN: You've had a number of unfortate injuries which have kept you out of some big competitions like the European Championships; how do you manage to work through these times?
AB: Injuries are part of the territory, I think every competitive gymnast will have an injury at some point in their career. I have some good back up support in my family, coaches, Phisio and fitness coach so the injuries become easier to deal with. The hardest injury or illness I have had to deal with has been my Epilepsy, this is always in the back of my mind when competing especially when the lights are bright or cameras flash. Hopefully I will grow out of this soon.

TBGN: Are there ever any days when you just want to quit and have more time to yourself?
AB: Quitting is being defeatist... there are times when I have had a bad Comp or bad training I think why can't I be normal. But the pros out weigh the Cons especially when I compete and train well.

TBGN: Who are your best friends when you go and train at Lilleshall?
AB: I would like to think I get on with every one who trains at Lilleshall, I have shared rooms with Ashtone Johnstone mostly. My best friend is Sarah Swift, she is great and like a big sister..

TBGN: You've built up a large following though your website, do you have a message for all your fans?
AB: My Website has been great, I have made so many friends from emails and guest page entries, last year I think I had over 1 million hits in the site. I find the emails I get sent very encouraging, I would like to say thank you for following my career and I hope this year I can compete better than I did last year.
