Gymnast of the Year

TBGN: For the start of 2003 you were sidelined with injury, are you back to full fitness now and can you tell us a bit more about the injury?
SB: Yes i am back to full fitness now, thank goddness!.All of my injurys were growth related, stress fractures of my elbows last year, severs in my heels last year and the beginning of 2003 and Shermans disease in my back which i developed in February. But i have recovered fully now and look forward to the rest of 2003!

TBGN: There have been talk that you are training a handspring layout front half (Wang) vault, is this true? (wikkid if you are!!!!)
SB: Sorry i am afraid this is just a rumour! I have just been pefecting my handsping pike half for the competitions coming up.

TBGN: 2003 has seen a lot of injuries for the british team, what is the mood in the camp like with so many set backs?
SB: I have not trained with the British team since March due to my injurys, but in the Barcelona training camp and when i have spoken to the GB girls recently they all seem to be ok and working hard for Anaheim, and those who are injured are trying to get fit with rehabilitation programmes.

TBGN: What do you think great britain need to do to qualify a full team to the olympics and do you think we will do it?
SB: I think Britian have a good chance of qualifying a team if all goes well. The GB team is a little younger than in previous years but i think that with all the members working so hard we should pull it off!

TBGN: Who would you say great britains main rivals are?
SB: Apart from the obvious ones, I think that GBs main rivals are probably Spain, Canada, Brazil, Bulgaria, Greece, and Italy, I have probably forgotten a few!

TBGN: Was it hard to skip competitions at the beginning of the year knowing that if you'd been healthy you could have competed?
SB: It was hard watching all my team mates flying off for competitons all over the world and doing so well, but injurys come with gymnastics and hopefully (touch wood) i have had my fair share for a little while!

TBGN: WSG has become well known for its stylish gymnastics, what would you say is the schools key to success ?
SB: Thank you! I think that WSG's main key to success is the coaching that all the members recieve. Tracey Skirton and Rachel Levik are the elite coaches and they are very good, we all work hard with them to be the best we can . Also the gym we train in is great and we have good equiptment so that helps.

TBGN: What's been your proudest moment so far in gymnastics?
SB: I probably have two proudest moments. One was when i won the British Championnships, it was great to be called British Champion! And the other was when i found out i had made the European team, I had to adjust my floor so i had minium arm impact because i was just recovering from stress fractures in my elbows.

TBGN: What is your ultimate goal in gymnastics and how would you feel if you acheived it?
SB: I think every gymnasts goal is to make the Olympic team. This has certainly been mine since i was little and it still is today . I would feel fantastic if i achieved my dream as it has been my goal since i was doing rolly polly's!I would still like it to come true whether it is in 2004 or 2008!!!

TBGN: What's next for Sam Bayley?!
SB: At the moment I am concentrating on the British Champs where i hope to do well to try and get a place in the EYOF team.I am also trying to stay free from injury this year!
