Gymnast of the Year

TBGN: You were part of a very successful team at Junior Europeans, how did you feel the team performed and did you enjoy Greece?
HG: I felt the team performed extremely well, we worked like a team all put in great performances and so achieved great results. I think as a team we only had to carry one fall, this was really good, and was another big factor why we got the great results we did. The whole trip was a fantastic experience and I enjoyed every minute of it! Hopefully I'll get a chance to do it all again some time.

TBGN: Is it special when you represent your country?
HG: Yes, definitely. It makes me feel really proud when I march out onto the competition floor wearing a Great Britain leotard and Track suit.

TBGN: What are some of your short term and long term goals for your gymnastics career ?
HG: I am aiming for a place on the World Championship team in 2003 and then the Olympic Games in 2004. I am also hoping to compete in the Commonwealth Games in 2006.

TBGN: What's the worst thing about being such a high level gymnast?
HG: I can't think of anything!

TBGN: And what's the best?
HG: Getting the opportunity to take part in major events, represent my country and meeting the gymnasts I look up to and admire.

TBGN: Next year the British team hopes to qualify their second ever team to an Olympic Games, how do you rate our chances?
HG: We will have a younger, less experienced team, but with a lot of potential. So hopefully we will qualify for the Olympic Games.

TBGN: During the Commonwealth Games you represented Scotland, your Dad's home nation. Scotland made the controversial and confusing decision to only send three gymnasts when they could have had up to five. How do you feel about this decision, especially with your twin sisters exclusion from the team must have been hard for the both of you.
HG: It certainly put a lot of pressure on the 3 of us, as all our scores had to count. I feel that with the extra team members we could have placed a lot higher than the 6th place we achieved. Even with a full team Carol would not have been there, as she was not able to compete on all pieces at the earlier trials, having been out for 8 months with an elbow injury. She only resumed full training in March.

TBGN: Is it hard for you and Carol when one of you succeeds while the other has troubles and is it nice to know that your sister always understands what your going through?
HG: It is quite difficult, but we are always very supportive of each other and it is nice to have each other to help get through the bad times.

TBGN: So which one of you is best then? ;)
HG: We both have our own strengths and have achieved different things!

TBGN: What's the best thing about the gym where you train, Wigan.
HG: The intensity of our training and the great coaches.

TBGN: What's your favourite way to relax when you get some spare time?
HG: I love to go shopping and I also just like to relax and listen to music.

TBGN: What are your favourite TV programmes and what's your favourite music?
HG: Friends is my favourite TV programme, I like Craig David and Destiny's Child, although I do like a lot of other stuff too. Mainly R 'n' B.
