Gymnast of the Year

TBGN: In the summer you represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games, can you tell us a bit about this experience?
RJ: It was a very good experience for me. It was really good being able to compete against a high standard. I learnt a lot from it and I also really enjoyed it.

TBGN: What has been the highlight of your competitive career so far?
RJ: I've represented Wales in many competitions receiving 1st in the Northern Europeans in Sweden, I came 3rd on vault and beam in the British championships and also competing in the Commonwealth Games 2002.

TBGN: What are your goals for the future in gymnastics?
RJ: I would like to be selected to compete in the next Commonwealth Games in 2006 Australia and hopefully in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

TBGN: When you're having a hard day do you ever feel like giving up and how do you work through these times?
RJ: When I am having a hard session sometimes I do feel as if I don't want to do it any more but I try to forget about it when I go home and try to make up for the mistakes I made in the last session.

TBGN: As a young gymnast, who did you look up to and do you have any gymnastics hero's/idols?
RJ: When I was younger I used to watch gymnastics on the television all the time. My idol would have to be Simona Amanar.

TBGN: How much spare time do you get and how do you like to spend it?
RJ: I don't get a lot of spare time but when I do I like to go out and spend time with all my friends.

TBGN: How do you like to relax after a hard days work out?
RJ: I like to go home, have a hot bath and go to bed and watch T.V.

TBGN: Would you say there are any drawbacks to being a top-level gymnast?
RJ: I do find that my friends ask me to go out sometimes and I have to go to the gym. I don't get a lot of time to go out with them because I'm in the gym most nights.

TBGN: Do your school friends understand about your gymnastics or do you tend not to talk to them about it?
RJ: I do talk to friends about it but their not really bothered. They do understand that I have to spend most of my time training but we make the most of it when we see each other.

TBGN: What are your strengths and weaknesses in gymnastics?
RJ: My strengths are Vaulting and Tumbling because I have very powerful legs but I am not as strong on Beam and Bars.

TBGN: What are your favourite apparatus?
RJ: My favourite pieces of apparatus are the Vault and Floor

TBGN: Will we be seeing you debut any new moves in the New Year?
RJ: Yes. Hopefully I am going to do Jager and one and a half turning giant on Bars, a couple of new things on Floor and Beam and hopefully a new Vault.
