At just 13-years-old, Jennifer Pinches knows what she wants. She also knows how to get there. Since she was 6 she has been training in gymnastics, climbing up the levels one by one, and in Summer 2007 she was crowned the English Champion. In 5 years time Jennifer wants the chance to shine on the Olympic stage, when the Olympics come to London. Just like the current stars of gymnastics, like Beth Tweddle and Nastia Liukin, Jennifer wants to become a well known and respected name in gymnastics.
Having begun her life as a gymnast at age 6 at her local club, Fromeside, Jennifer, or Jem as she is known (Jennifer Elizabeth Mary) started off training just 1 hour per week. She soon caught the eye of coach Liz Kincaid who instantly realised the potential Jem showed and told her parents that she was "born to do gymnastics". With this extra guidance and training, Jem excelled and was soon mastering difficult new moves.
In 2003 Jennifer became the level 4 British Champion and was ranked #2 in Great Britain. Because of this achievement she was able to attend a training camp for talented British hopefuls at the world-renowned Romanian gymnastics centre, Cetate Deva. Being able to train in a place where Olympic medals are a norm was very beneficial to Jennifer. In 2004 Jennifer moved up to level 3 and was again crowned British Champion for her level.
After her long time coach Tracey Kerr left Fromeside to go to The Academy run by ex-Fromeside coach Liz Kincaid, Jem decided that she wanted to remain under Tracey's guidance and also made the move, along with a number of team mates. This move was just days before the British Levels Championships, testament to Jennifer's unshakable mental attitude.
2005 and 2006 were tough years for Jennifer when injuries & illness plagued her competition schedule. Due to her father being transferred up north for work, the Pinches family re-located to Cheshire, and Jem now trains at the world-renowned Liverpool gymnastics club, along side world-champion and Jem's mentor, Beth Tweddle. Liverpool has proved an excellent environment for Jennifer and she has continued to improve in her gymnastics work.
In her free time, Jem likes doing things typical of 13-year-olds. One of her passions is acting and she would ultimately like a career in television. She entered a Dr Who acting competition on Blue Peter and appeared in the hit TV programme as a top 10 finalist in April 2007. She came 5th overall from over 80,000 entries! Jem is no stranger to the cameras as she also appeared in a half hour Channel 5 documentary called "A Different Life" in 2005, all about kids whose lives are different than most. Jennifer also likes spending her free time on her computer.
